Another Country

Another Country makes contemporary craft furniture and accessories. Our designs are archetypal, calling on the familiar and unpretentious forms of British Country kitchen style, Shaker, traditional Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork for inspiration. We endeavor to re-interpret the spirit and functionality of these honest forms of furniture for a modern customer.

Another Country aims to deliver quality and longevity at fair prices - our products are built to last, both in terms of construction and style. Our core business model is a direct to the consumer one and that means you get these high quality products for less but we also sell through select partners worldwide. All of our wooden products are made from FSC certified solid woods in the UK and Portugal. We make use of simple craft techniques and work in as sustainable a way as possible. Green Matters details our culture of making.

Series One

This first collection from Another Country was as clear and simple an interpretation of our original intention in furniture manufacturing as we could manage. We took familiar forms of craft furniture and pared them back to their most basic elements and made them using the most efficient workshop techniques and the best quality wood.

We are concerned with efficiency, both yours and ours. So each pieces of furniture in Series One is made in a way that limits wasted material and time (our leg systems are universal), that is easy to transport (flat-pack for large pieces) and versatile (meaning your furniture gets more than one job done).

Our Series One products have become something of archetypes themselves. They are the collection that we’ve become most associated with and that we continue to add to and evolve.

Series Two

The second collection from Another Country remains true to the design values we introduced with our first series of solid wood furniture. These are similarly functional, timeless and versatile designs. However, the forms and the material palette for this series is very different: The clean-cut, angular forms of Series Two were inspired by the no-nonsense style of Japanese and Scandinavian furniture and the pale woods favoured in contemporary Belgian craft production.

We only use the best quality, solid wood and for this collection we’ve employed a winning combination of ash and walnut. Brass is an additional accent, adding decoration as well as structural support. A construction method, of our invention, means most pieces in the collection are flat-pack and therefore efficient to transport.

We endeavour to produce our product and run our business at the most sustainable level possible. We source timber that is FSC certified from either UK, European and US suppliers, manufacture in workshops in the UK and Portugal, pack and deliver directly to you. We intend for our product to last and we do everything possible to give them longevity.

Another Country is made up of real people leading real lives (albeit informed by a highly attuned eye for good design!) who are committed to working and living responsibly. Every aspect of what we do is considered. From our beautiful business collateral (designed by Bravo Charlie Mike Hotel) that is kept to a necessary minimum, designed to be of generic use and printed on recycled stock, to our packaging that is made of recyclable cardboard with recyclable paper or board inserts. There are instances where our suppliers use packaging that may not always adhere to our standards but be assured that we work tirelessly to ensure they will do so.

Our day bed mattress and bolster, floor cushion and seat pad are made by Naturalmat for Another Country. Naturalmat is the only UK mattress maker using certified organic latex and certified organic coir (coconut fibre) and source their lambswool locally.

As our business grows we intend to stick to our principles and come up with solutions that enable us to grow sustainably and responsibly.

We combine traditional methods of making with modern technology to ensure that each piece is made with great care, attention to detail and precision. Every piece is hand assembled, hand finished and quality controlled before leaving our workshops.

We have filmed one of our visits to our wonderful partner workshop in Portugal, one hour south of the beautiful city of Porto.
