Working from home without a study has its challenges. For many the kitchen table will be the go-to work surface, for others, the sofa will do. But then, at day’s end, where does the laptop live, or our papers, and do we really want to stare at a big, black desktop screen in the evening?
The Davenport Bureau is designed to provide a separation between work and home life, to provide a dedicated space for work that can be easily tidied away at the end of the working day. It is also a handy solution for a hotel room desk cum bar.
As a design concept, the fold-down element of traditional bureaus has been adopted but without the angled front, so it’s not immediately obvious that it is not a desk. When closed it reads like a cabinet, helping to remove the visual reminder of work when wanting to switch off (it can also double as a bar). The straight sides also create more of an enclosure, slightly enveloping the user, with the aim of adding focus while working.
Internally, the proportions are generous, providing ample desk space and storage while allowing a computer monitor* to fit in the main opening. The bureau has lots of hidden compartments for a variety of stationery and other bits, a pin board for all those important reminders and photos of loved ones, and a hidden compartment for cables and the lighting hardware.
Overall, it’s an understated design with a focus on the quality of materials and hardware, with rounded edges that help soften the overall appearance, a motif that is carried through to the brass handle and interior detailing.
