Gina is a fantastic photographer and through her work we see the resurrection of long forgotten and lost buildings. Her dedication to tracking down, travelling and gaining access to these often inaccessible locations is astounding. She offers us a rare glimpse of these once majestic buildings and despite their state of disrepair, she still finds the beauty in them. She regularly travels deep into Europe to photograph abandoned buildings, many of which are not accessible to the public and therefore the potential controversy of gaining unlicensed access to these out of bounds areas adds another element to her works through her determination and tenacity of actually getting in. The genesis of each piece is often the unique architectural character of each location, heightened by their painfully slow transformation after years of abandonment. Soden chooses places with great architecture and is careful to capture it’s symmetry and balance resulting in these wonderfully edgy, contemporary yet timeless photographs.
“Like the Romantic poets before her, Soden offers room to reflect on more romantic notions of beauty and a sense of calmness despite collapse and structural devastation.”
