Beautiful hand turned wooden bowl in British charred Ash. With a contemporary design and a finishing technique that dates back millennia.
This black wood bowl is hand turned from English Ash, grown in East Sussex. The top of the bowl is left as a natural rough edge, showing the rawness of the grain.
Once shaped the bowl goes through the ancient Japanese technique of Yakisugi, scorching with a 2000 degree flame to cause instant charring. An abrasive is then used to remove the thin layer of loose charcoal and the process starts again. After the second charring the bowl is treated with a food safe hard wax oil.
The underside of this bowl has the Bird and Branch logo at its centre.
Some fine cracks and splits are evidence of the rapid moisture loss that takes place during the making of a Yakisugi piece. These are stable, and won’t expand.
The handmade quality of this hand turned wooden bowl, with its roots in ancient Japanese artisan techniques, gives this decorative and practical serving dish a beautiful connection in the Natural Home.
