- Fusing Scandinavian design and British hardwood, each of these decorative statement pieces is slowly hand carved by Bird & Branch with locally sourced sustainable hardwood. The grain of the wood is preserved, and the shapes of these wooden bowls, vases and candles sticks open the opportunity to create your own story for years to come.
This large wooden bowl from English Oak has undergone the ancient Japanese technique of Yakisugi to create a black charred effect on the outside, leaving the inside natural oak.
Once the oak bowl has been hand turned, parts of the bowl are scorched with a 2000 degree flame to instantly char the outside surface. The inside is left as uncharred natural oak. An abrasive is used to remove the thin layer of loose charcoal from the outside surface and the process starts again. The bowl is then treated with a food safe hard wax oil.
The underside of this large wooden serving bowl is also charred and contains the Bird and Branch logo at its centre.
Some fine cracks and splits are evidence of the rapid moisture loss that takes place during the making of a Yakisugi piece, however, these are now stable and won’t get any larger.
Adding tactile and interesting surfaces to catch your attention is a key element in the Natural Home.
