Edition by Another Country Purbeck Coffee Table
The Purbeck coffee table is an ode to the West Country, the same corner of England where it is made. The contemporary design is comprised of three parts: a smooth strip of maple that rests atop one cylindrical marble leg and one square wooden leg. The curved edges and organic shape of the marble post and tabletop contrast with other marked, angular leg, juxtaposing both form and material simultaneously.
The silhouette of the frame leans into an elevated yet warm aesthetic with soft contours and clean lines. The pippy oak leg is finished with natural oil whilst the maple top has a raw finish, and each part fixes together using minimal fastenings.
Each element of the Purbeck coffee table, from its materials to its construction, has been sourced in the UK. The marble is from Haysom Purbeck Stone, an 11th-generation family business specialising in the quarrying of Purbeck stone. The Dorset-based masonry works with dedicated craftspeople that produce made-to-order pieces to minimise waste.
The second leg is made from pippy oak – a vibrant, characterful grain accented with irregular patterns on its surface. This material is impacted by nature and the animals of its surroundings; local cattle graze around the trunk and form new shoots to grow. This continuous cycle creates small knots that pepper the wood, creating a variation in colour and a unique design.
